Singing Lessons

Philip’s approach recognises the vital importance of vocal demonstration alongside verbal explanation, and is directed towards developing technique which builds the vocal instrument for the long term, and the elimination of behaviours which can ultimately harm the voice.

He has considerable expertise in working with professional and non-professional singers to repair the damage caused by poor technique. A tenor himself, he works with students of all voice types, in all styles of music from rock to musical theatre to classical, with particular strengths in teaching the art-song, oratorio and operatic repertoires. Between 2007 and 2011 (the last year in which the competition was held), his students were prize-winners in each year’s Singing Competition at Canterbury Christ Church University, winning first prize three years in succession.

Philip moved to Norwich in October 2016, and has established his teaching practice close to the city centre.

Regular Lessons

Most people will choose this route. We can be very flexible about working out a plan just for you – whether it’s coming weekly, fortnightly, or even going for monthly lessons – we can mix and match options according to your rate of progress, your deadlines, and of course your budget!

One-off coaching sessions

When an audition is looming, it’s a really good idea to have a fresh ear listen to your chosen pieces, and give you straightforward advice as to those little things you can improve to turn a good performance into a great one. Or, if you haven’t chosen those pieces yet, to get some impartial advice on which repertoire suits you best. Having trouble with one monster of a phrase? We can even work on just that!

The control of both range and power that I am discovering with Philip…
